The Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, patron saint of Volos and patron saint of sailors, is located in the center of the city, and is one of the most common meeting points of its inhabitants, especially the young people. Designed by the architect Aristotle Zachos, in Byzantine style with a dome, the church was rebuilt in 1934 on the foundations of an older church, destroyed by a fire in 1898, and was inaugurated by the then Metropolitan Germanos of Demetrias.
Special features of the church are: The external cladding with colored hewn stone and rock reliefs of great artistic value. The baroque style bell tower that was completed in 1890 by Italian craftsmen; It was a feature of the previous church and a design by the famous Italian engineer Evaristo De Chirico, father of the famous Italian painter Giorgio De Chirico. The courtyard of the church, apart from its religious use, is also a social and cultural reference point for Volos. At various times throughout the day, the area is visited by families, groups of young people, students and elderly people who spend time there, while it often hosts quality outdoor cultural and artistic events.
