June 27, 2019Hatzigiannis Traditional Olive Mill
It is a complex of 2 buildings and a common courtyard: the traditional Hadjigianni water mill, acquired by the Municipality of Portaria in 2000, and the adjacent Hatzigianni House, where the Katigori Agricultural Economics Exhibition has been operating since the summer of 2012.
Crossing the doorstep of the house, after a brief reference to the history of Katigori and the "action" of the Hatzigiannis family, the exhibition highlights the timeless value and importance of two even today's key products of the local economy: the famous Katigori wine and tsipouro.
Plants, farm tools, ammunition, demigods, arcades, bottles & garden counters compose the image of a long-standing tradition in the production of strong wine and glossy tsipouro.
Among the exhibits are items from a private chemist in Volos, the late Dimitris Psychoulis, who were assigned by his relatives to the Municipal History Center and are directly linked to the quality control of the wine and tsipouro of Pelion producers.
The olive press reveals to the visitor the 'secrets' of the olive and introduces him to the traditional time-consuming process of producing oil. As its machines are in excellent condition the space is "alive" for the creation of activities and educational programs on topics related to olive and oil.
